Digital Orthodontics

How We Use 3D Printing in Orthodontics for Accurate Outcomes

With the introduction of 3D printing technology into the realm of orthodontics, manual orthodontic procedures have become much faster, more efficient and relatively accurate. Evolving technology and integration of digital dentistry in our private practice has enabled us to revolutionize our orthodontic treatment from a standard two-dimensional technique to an individualized 3D approach. This innovative technology allows us to concentrate on providing patients with a comfortable dental experience while creating a perfect and healthy smile that ensures ideal facial balance. Furthermore, this cutting-edge innovation has dramatically reduced delivery times without compromising on either efficiency or accuracy of outcomes.

Our dental office uses a revolutionary wand-like intraoral 3D scanner for precise digital impressions that make a world of difference for patients with gag-reflexes, smaller mouths and special needs. Our 3D dental imaging is a straightforward process that greatly reduces the need for repeat dental appointments and impression appointments.

Our In-house 3-Step 3D Printing Process

1. 3D Dental Imaging
The intraoral 3D scanner is used for taking pictures of the patient’s teeth. These pictures are then used for creating a high definition digital rendition of the mouth which is exported to the lab. The lab employs a state-of-the-art HIPAA compliant cloud application that is custom designed to transform alginate impressions and stone models into digital files. After the file has been created, the CAD-CAM software is used for preparing the files for printing. The final files are then used for custom designing clear aligners or retainers. The entire procedure is performed under the guidance and supervision of our highly skilled dental assistants.

2. Designing of the Dental Appliance
Once we receive or create a patient’s file, the next step is correcting the position of the tooth and straightening it. At this stage all the files are meticulously prepared for printing and this may take several steps. Our dental technicians use the latest measuring tools and comparative devices to carefully correct the position of the teeth. 3D digital imaging has become a great tool in custom designing accurate and comfortable clear aligners. Additionally, the dental images also reflect the range of movement for every individual tooth, making it much easier for us to determine the amount of interproximal reduction needed for every patient. Once this treatment stage is accomplished, the files are further exported to the dental 3D scanner.

3. Printing of the Digital Model
The 3rd and the last stage of the treatment is the printing of files. After the digital files are exported to the printing software, all the files are cautiously organized on the printing platform to avoid any printing failures. An average print job takes anywhere between 4 to 8 hours depending on the volume.

3D imaging allows for better control, super quality results, unmatched precision and speed; making our dental procedures faster and efficient while reducing the number of appointments you need.
